Whatever needs to be warmed must be positioned close to the fire and exposed directly to its radiance. Any warmed air rises providing little warmth, beyond that flowing around or past you. Objects intercepting the fire’s radiance will warm up and in turn emit some radiance, but in a much longer or cooler wavelength.
2. Back protection blocks the infiltration of cold air on the side away from the fire. By absorbing the radiance from the fire, the back protection provides warmth on the far side of your body. Split white wood will reflect some of the radiance back toward your far side. The back protection should be as close to the fire as possible without any space between the back protection and your far shoulder.
